The Capitol Theatre has been at the center of the Salt Lake arts and culture community since its opening in 1913 as the Orpheum Theatre. Originally a vaudeville house, the Orpheum offered “highest standard acts and greatest stars of the stage.” More than 100 years later, the venue continues to host exceptional events and performers. The Capitol is home to Resident companies Ballet West, Utah Opera and hosts the JazzSLC series.
There are countless memories contained within our walls. Many Utahn’s have their first performing arts experience at the Capitol Theatre as a participant or a spectator. For many families, the Holidays are not complete without attending The Nutcracker. Broadway stars including Robert Goulet, Carol Channing, Molly Ringwald, and Marissa Jaret Winkour have played on our stage. Some lucky Utahn’s even remember when the Capitol was a movie theater and a vaudeville stage!
Capitol Theatre’s Illustrious Architect
Gustave Albert Lansburgh (1876-1969) was a San Francisco-based architect, with a degree in architecture from the École des Beaux Arts in Paris (1906). He is best known for his work on luxury theaters and cinemas, designing more than 50 theaters nationwide for the Orpheum Theater Circuit, primarily on the west coast.
He designed the Orpheum (Capitol) Theatre and used the latest in architectural technologies and finishes including steel reinforcement and a terra cotta clad exterior, a new finish found only on the Hotel Utah. On its opening in 1913, the Theatre was recognized as an architectural gem and a reporter at the time described the Orpheum’s décor as “rich and restful without vulgar or gaudy display.”
Other theaters designed by Lansburgh include the El Capitan Theatre and Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, and the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York City.
